Spicy, smoky black eyed pea soup.

Why do we eat black eyed pea soup on New Year’s Day?

It is tradition for a lot of people in the Southern United States to eat black eyed peas and collard greens on New Year’s Day. There are several legends as to where and when this custom originated, some date as far back as 500 A.D. The black eyed peas are said to bring good luck. Collard greens are said to bring money due to their green color. Whoever started this tradition, I’d like to personally thank them because this recipe is delicious!!!

For this recipe I wanted to keep it simple, so I used pre-cooked, canned black eyed peas. You can totally buy dried peas and make them ahead of time to add to this recipe. I used collard greens to keep the recipe traditional, you can use kale, rainbow chard, mustard greens or eve use frozen spinach in a pinch. As for the jalapeno, I used a large pepper and left all the seeds. On a spice level scale from 1 thru 10, I give this a 7. Please adjust for your spice tolerance level, you can remove the seeds from half or all of the pepper. Or if you want to omit the jalapeno altogether, please do, I would suggest to add some extra chili powder or dried red pepper flakes in place of the jalapeno.

This soup is traditionally served with a vinegar based hot sauce. You can add whatever hot sauce you’d like. I personally will add red wine vinegar to my bowl for that little ‘pop’. This is also best served with your favorite bread, I prefer a toasted baguette, it really completes this hearty dish.

Notes

For the collard greens you can substitute with kale, mustard greens or rainbow chard.  If you cannot find any of these in your area, you can use frozen spinach.

You can remove the seeds from the jalapeno if you are sensitive to spice.

This soup can keep in fridge for 5 days or 3 months in freezer.
