Lentil Sloppy Joes

Hearty Lentil Sloppy Joes! Delicious plant based twist on an all time dinner favorite! Packed with so much flavor, you will forget how nutritious they are!



1 1/2 cups uncooked green lentils

1 small yellow or white onion, diced

1 bell pepper (red or green), diced

2 medium carrots, diced

4 cloves garlic, minced

1 1/2 TBSP chili powder

1 tsp cumin

1/2 tsp onion powder

1/2 tsp smoked paprika

1/4 tsp cayenne pepper

1-(15 oz) can tomato sauce

1-(15 oz) can diced fire roasted tomatoes

2 cups water

2 tsp worcestershire sauce (make sure it’s the vegan brand if you are vegan)

2 tsp rice wine vinegar

1 tsp yellow mustard

1 tsp liquid smoke

salt and pepper to taste


Place all ingredients into slow cooker (no need to sautee anything) stir to combine.

Cook on high for four hours.

Check during the last hour and add more liquid if necessary.

Ready to eat!  These will keep in the slow cooker on warm until ready to serve.


I add rice wine vinegar to almost all my sauces, I feel it gives recipes that little punch!  You can omit this if you choose.  

This recipe is very forgiving, you you do not have a vegetable or spice, simple replace with something similar.  I have added spinach and mushrooms to this and it was great.

Leftovers will keep in the fridge for 3-4 days or in the freezer for 4-5 months.

If you have my  Homemade Mexican Spice Blend on hand, you can simply add 2 1/4 TBSP of this to replace all spices listed above Homemade Mexican Spice Blend
